Lady Pios earn No. 1 seed in Division IV playoffs
CROWLEY – After starting the season at 11-9, the Notre Dame Lady Pios reeled off 19 straight victories before dropping two of their five games in the ESA Spooktacular Tournament over the weekend.
However, the two-game setback and a fourth-place finish didn’t hurt the Lady Pios in the power ratings.
As expected, the Lady Pios (33-11) once again claimed the top seed in the Division II volleyball playoffs when the brackets were released Monday morning.
“We are totally excited,” said Notre Dame Coach Tara Young of her team’s seeding. “We knew we were close going into this weekend. The fact that we had a tough schedule throughout the season paid off for us. Although we had more losses than in some years, that tough schedule puts us where we need to be for the state tournament.”
All of Notre Dame’s losses have been to teams that have earned Top 10 seeds in the playoffs, including the other four top seeds - Division I, Fontainbleu; Divsion II, St. Thomas More, Division III, Ursuline and Division V, Country Day.
They also own two victories over St. Thomas More as well as impressive wins over Division I’s No. 8 Chapelle (twice), Division II’s No. 6 St. Scholastica, Division IV’s No. 5 Catholic-NI (twice) and No. 9 Northlake Christian and Division IV’s No. 6 Hannan.
With the No. 1 seed, Notre Dame earned a bye in the first round. The Lady Pios will play the winner of the St. Charles-Dunham matchup next week in the Regional round.
“We were hoping to get in a tuneup game, but the time off will be good for us,” said Young. “We didn’t get to practice much last week because we had games almost every day so it will be good to kind of get back to the drawing board and the basics and get some practice time in.”
Iota, which finished the season with a mark of 30-7, earned the No. 11 seed in the Division IV playoffs and will play host to No. 22 Fisher on Thursday. Action is tentatively set for 3:30 p.m.
Rayne enters the Division III playoffs as the No. 8 seed and received a bye in the first round. The Lady Wolves will play the winner of Thursday’s Lakeshore-Evangel contest in the Regional round next week.
Northside Christian (11-18) earned the No. 20 seed in Division V and will travel to No. 13 White Castle on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
