Lady Pios edge Westlake to take 4-3A lead

CROWLEY – Notre Dame coach Nolan Theriot knew his squad would have to be clicking on all cylinders in order to give No. 9 Westlake a game Tuesday evening at A.B. Dore gym.

His team was up to the challenge.

The Lady Pios trailed for nearly the entire contest but rallied for 22 points in the fourth quarter to slip past the Lady Rams, 65-62.

Notre Dame improved to 15-9 overall and, more importantly, to 3-0 in District 4-3A with the victory. Westlake fell to 13-7 and 2-1.

“I felt like Westlake was the best team in the district and we were going to have to play really well in my opinion, just to compete,” said Theriot. “We gave up some things early on that we knew were going to happen. They (Westlake) are not blazing but they play fast.

“But we did a remarkable job of switching defenses and contesting shots. And offensively, we did a great job of attacking and really seeing the open man.”

The Lady Pios trailed for the first three and a half quarters before finally taking a one-point lead with just under four minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

“But then we gave it right back,” said Theriot. “We didn’t really break away until the final minute.”

Sparking the Lady Pios’ offensive output in the fourth quarter was Alex Miller, who scored 10 points in the final minutes to finish with a team-high 14 on the night.

Marie Ledet added six points in the fourth quarter and finished with 13.

Also contributing in the victory were Sam Lyons with 12 points; Mallory Chiasson with 10; Katherine Kirsch with eight; Mary Charles with seven and Gabbi Romero with one.

Westlake avoided the sweep with a 67-43 victory over the Pioneers in the nightcap.

The Rams jumped out to a 32-17 lead at the half and outscored the Pios 35-26 in the second half.

Jermerrio Lollis led the Pios with 13 points and Austin Bordelon had 10. Waylon Young followed with nine points, Charlie Mayeaux had four and Tre Milstead had three. C.J. Hundley and Christian Landry rounded out the scoring with two points each.

Notre Dame returns to action Friday when they travel across town to take on Crowley. Jayvee action is slated for 5:30 with varsity action to follow.
