Lady Pios log volleyball sweep at Sam Houston
MOSS BLUFF – After struggling to find a rhythm early, Notre Dame's Allison Leonards and Megan Malme caught fire to get the offense back on track and propel the Lady Pios to a sweep at Sam Houston Thursday night. The Pios rolled past the Broncos, 25-20, 25-14, 25-13.
Leonards slammed a kill from the left outside to put the Pios ahead 14-13 in a back and forth first game. Malme dropped in consecutive winners to extend the lead and Leonards capped the rally with another spike across the Broncos defense to secure the opening game.
The duo along with Katherine Kirsch led a balanced scoring attack with six kills each. Alaina Savoy and Marie Ledet each added five kills.
Sam Houston kept the Pios in check at the start of the second game until Savoy took a short set in the middle for a quick kill and an 11-9 lead. Leonards burned another spike into the middle of the Sam Houston defense and Lindsey Meyers added a block down kill at the net on a Broncos spike attempt.
Leading 14-10, Alaina Savoy served a 5 point run that included three service aces and kills from Kirsch and Meyers. Marie Ledet scored off a set from Ali Daigle and the Pios defense forced an error for the final point of the second game.
Megan Malme got the Pios off to a fast start in the deciding game with a push winner over double blockers from the left side. A five point run with kills from Kirsch, Ledet and Leonards gave Notre Dame a 15-10 lead and the Lady Pios overcame two Broncos timeouts to build the lead to 22-9.
Malme directed a kill past a single blocker and down the left sideline for a winner and Savoy banged another quick set into the floor to complete the 3-game sweep.
Notre Dame won for the third consecutive time, improving to 3-1 after a tough season opening loss to Lafayette High. The Lady Pios played in the Episcopal, Baton Rouge, tournament over the weekend against some of the top teams from the area. Results will follow in next week’s Post Signal.
