CROWLEY - The Notre Dame Lady Pios improved to 5-7 on the season Thursday with a 3-0 home victory over the Kaplan Lady Pirates.
The shutout victory was the second of the week for the Lady Pios, who blanked South Beauregard, at home on Tuesday, 4-0.
“We needed these two victories,” said Notre Dame coach Lance Reed of the two-game sweep. “The girls were looking to get some momentum going with district right around the corner and I think we were able to do that with these two wins.”
In Thursday’s contest, the Lady Pios logged four hits off Kaplan standout hurler Lanie Hollier in earning their fifth victory of the season.
Taylor Simon got things going in the fourth inning with a leadoff triple. Simon later scored on a single from Alex Boulet. Boulet then stole second base, moved to third on a fielder choice by Meranda LeBlanc and scored on a passed ball.
The Lady Pios posted an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Simon doubled, stole third and scored on an error.
Notre Dame pitcher Amelia Lavergne did her part, giving up just two hits and striking out three through seven innings.
“Amelia put forth her best performance of the year in the circle,” said Reed. “To hold that powerful team to just two hits is awesome.”
Simon led the Lady Pios at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance that included a double and a triple. She also scored two of the three Lady Pio runs.
Boulet was 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI and Caroline Stewart rounded out the offense with a single.
“We played a complete game tonight,” said Reed. “We put the bat on the ball and we were not intimidated at all and our defense came together and played strong. It was great to watch them perform and do well.”
In Tuesday’s victory over South Beauregard, the Lady Pios banged out six runs in the first two innings and Lavergne did the rest, holding the Lady Knights scoreless for seven innings.
Hannah Miller had the big blow for the Lady Pios, tagging a bases-loaded triple while Hannah Godeaux also drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.
Simon tripled in the second inning and scored on a single from Boulet to extend the lead to 5-0. Boulet later scored on a passed ball.
Lavergne limited South Bearegard to just four hits while walking three and striking out three.
The Lady Pios will be in action again Tuesday when they play host to Teurlings at Fats Leger Memorial Field. First pitch is slated for 5 o’clock.
