Lady Pios sweep St. Thomas More
CROWLEY – After struggling through some early growing pains and a rugged non-district schedule, the 2010 Division III state volleyball champion Notre Dame Lady Pios’ finally seem to be hitting their stride.
The Lady Pios (13-9) logged their second straight victory over a defending state champion on Monday, sweeping 2010 Division II title holder St. Thomas More in straight sets at A.B. Dore gym.
Last Wednesday, Notre Dame knocked off 2010 Division IV state champion Catholic High of New Iberia to open district play.
“We’ve played some really good teams this year,” said Notre Dame coach Tara Young, whose team won the Division III state title last year. “And we lost some very good players off last year’s team. It has just taken us a while to find our rhythm.”
Finding that rhythm wasn’t a problem Monday. Notre Dame took a 25-17 victory in the first game before winning the second, 25-19. The Lady Pios closed out the match in the third game with a 25-22 victory.
Allison Leonards led the Lady Pios with nine kills, 13 digs and one block. Alana Savoy (7 digs, 1 block), Megan Malmay (5 digs) and Katherine Kirsch (8 digs, 1 block) followed with seven kills each.
Also contributing for the Lady Pios were Lindsey Meyer (3 kills, 1 assist, 2 digs, 1 block), Alex Miller (2 kills, 20 assists, 3 digs, 1 ace), Marie Ledet (1 kill, 12 assists, 3 digs, 1 ace), Taylor Boulet (1 assist, 9 digs, 1 ace) and Mallory Chiasson (31 digs, 1 ace).
The Lady Pios traveled to Iota last night for a district showdown with the Lady Bulldogs. Results from that contest were not available at press time.
