Lady Pios top OC; Pioneers fall short

OPELOUSAS – Depth has not been a problem for the Notre Dame Lady Pios during the early part of the 2009-10 season and it was evident Monday in their non-district road contest against Opelousas Catholic.

The Lady Pios (11-3) spread the ball around all night, placing 12 players in the scoring column in a 54-27 victory over the homestanding Lady Vikings.

The Lady Pios jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter before taking a 28-10 advantage at the half.

Notre Dame outscored the Lady Vikings 26-17 in the second half.

Lexi Trosclair and Celia Charles led the Lady Pios with eight points each while Mallory Chaisson had seven.

Taylor Simon and Mary Charles each chipped in six points; Emily Vidrine and Taylor Gray each scored four; Marie Ledet added three and Peyton Miller, Alex Boulet, Katherine Parsley and Caroline Stewart each had two.

The Lady Pios will be in action again Saturday when they take on Mamou at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the Midland Spectacular Tournament.

In other action Monday night, the Pioneers weren’t as fortunate as the Lady Pios in the nightcap, falling to the Vikings, 64-50.

The Pios (3-7) kept it close early on and even took a 24-23 advantage at the break.

But Opelousas Catholic took over in the second half, going on an 8-2 run to end the frame to take a 42-35 lead into the final stanza.

The cold spell continued for Notre Dame in the fourth quarter with the Pios scoring just two points in the first three minutes of the frame.

Dorian Durald led the charge for Opelousas Catholic in the fourth, scoring eight of his game-high 19 points in the final eight minutes. The Vikings outscored the Pios 22-15 in the final frame.

Darius Ricard followed Durald with 13 points and center Dylan Tabb added 11 inside the paint.

Kane Thibodeaux paced the Pios with 17 points and Taylor Thibodeaux scored 15.

Also contributing for Notre Dame were B.J. Vidrine with five points; Jeremy Smith with four; Jesse Smith with three and Drew Trahan, Will Faulk and Blaine Richard each with two.
