The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers put the finishing touches on a surprising District 5-2A basketball season by blasting the Vinton High School Lady Lions on the road in Vinton this past Tuesday evening, February 10, 2009 by a final score of 65-42.

With the win, Lake Arthur grabbed sole possession of second place in the league behind the Kinder High School Lady Yellow Jackets and will wait to see who their first round playoff opponent will be.

The Lady Tigers used their 1-3-1 zone defense to pressure the home team early and set the tone of the basketball game, as they took a quick 13-7 lead after one quarter.

The steady pace continued in the second stanza, as Lady Tiger sophomore point guard Carly Hay and sophomore forward Devyn Trahan led the offensive assault on the bucket, leading a 14-8 eight minute charge to take a convincing 27-15 advantage at the half.

The visitors continued to pour it on in the third quarter, outscoring Vinton 15-11 to grab a 42-26 lead entering the fourth and final period.

In the final frame, the Lady Tigers turned the offense up a notch, running the Lady Lions off the court by a 23-16 count to waltz away with the 65-42 district win.

Hay and Trahan led Lake Arthur offensively with 22 points apiece, while Ashalun Brown pumped in five. Keyontae Campbell and Morgan Benoit each threw in four, while Samantha LeJeune and Sabrina Benoit contributed three tallies apiece. Kadie Bonin added the final two points for the winners.

Lake Arthur hit on 22 field goals, five three pointers, and was 16 of 33 from the free throw line.

Vinton was led by the 12 points of Keeya Williams.

With the win, Lake Arthur improved to 7-14 on the season and 4-2 in District 5-2A play.

Vinton, which is still winless, fell to 0-20 overall and 0-5 in the league.
