The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers completed a two-game sweep of their arch rivals, the Welsh Lady Hounds, by thoroughly beating them by a count of 50-30 on Senior Night this past Friday evening, January 30, 2009 in the friendly confines of the Wilbert C. “Nooky” Moore Gymnasium in Lake Arthur.
Earlier this season, Lake Arthur took a convincing 62-40 win over the Lady Hounds in Welsh in the district opener for both teams.
Welsh took an early 6-2 lead, sinking all of their points via the free throw line after viciously attacking the bucket.
But the Lady Tigers regrouped later in that first stanza, rallying back with good defense and transitions buckets to take a 10-8 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
Welsh tried to stifle the offensive exploits of Lake Arthur sophomore point guard Carly Hay by employing a box-and-one on her, but all that did was leave open the middle of the lane for Lady Tiger drives to the hoop.
Lake Arthur pulled away steadily in the second period, outscoring Welsh 15-6 to grab a comfortable 25-14 lead at the half.
Welsh roared back in the third quarter, sinking their defense back into the paint and giving up 15-footers to selected Lady Tiger players, who were ice cold from the field.
Welsh finished the frame on a 10-4 run to cut the Lake Arthur lead to 29-24 entering the final period.
Just minutes into the fourth period, Lake Arthur’s 11-point lead had dwindled to just three points, with Welsh gaining possession with a chance at tying the contest.
But a key steal and three-point play by Lady Tiger junior guard Ashalun Brown stretched the lead back to six and cut the Lady Hound momentum.
One possession later, Hay drained a key three-pointer from the right corner to up the advantage to nine and send Welsh back on their heels again, where they never recovered.
Lake Arthur took advantage of poor Welsh shooting to finish the contest on a 21-6 eight minute run to win by a final score of 50-30.
Hay and Keyontae Campbell each had 11 tallies to lead Lake Arthur, while Brown tossed in 10. Samantha LeJeune and Devyn Trahan each threw in eight, while Kadie Bonin added the final two points for the winners.
Cassie Broussard led Welsh with 10, while star forward Lauren Pickle had just nine markers.
With the win, the Lady Tigers improved to 6-13 for the season and 3-1 in District 5-2A play, while Welsh fell to 6-13 and 2-2.
