Lady Wolves advance in playoffs
Round one down, hopefully more to go for the Rayne High Lady Wolves softball team as they hosted Ursaline Academy Tuesday afternoon in the first round the 3-A state playoffs.
Behind six hits and a strong showing by sophomore pitcher Mariel Meche, the Lady Wolves blanked Ursaline 8-0 in the opening round of AAA action held at Gossen Park in Rayne.
Meche basically shut down her opponents turning in 13 strikeouts, one walk and only three hits in the seven inning contest. She also donated to the win at the plate as she was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI.
Helping in the offensive column for Rayne High were Kelsey Hollier, Kaitlin Thibodeaux, Shandi Deville, Skyla Schexnider and Tori Mott, each 1-for-3. Thibodeaux and Deville rapped in one and two RBIs, respectively.
Julie Boutin was 2-for-4 on the day turning in a triple and 2 RBIs.
Hailey Habetz collected a hit and baserunner Courtney Johnson scored one of four runs in the final inning.
The Lady Wolves will move into the second round of action Friday as they travel to #7 Westlake for a 5 p.m. game. Second round winners will then advance to the State Tournament slated next week at the Sulphur Complex.
Notre Dame Lady Pios
Notre Dame’s Lady Pios were halted in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs Tuesday afternoon as North Vermilion handed them a 7-1 loss.
Hannah Godeaux was tagged with the loss on the mound for the Lady Pios turning in a 6-hit, 2-walk, 4-strikeout showing in five innings.
North Vermilion’s Brittany LeBlanc fanned four batters and allowed no walks in the seven inning showdown.
Collecting hits for the Lady Pios were Taylor Simon 2-3 and Meranda LeBlanc 1-3, scoring Notre Dame’s only run.
