Lady Wolves headed to playoffs

Until the very last game of the 2009-2010 softball season, the top spots of district 5-3A were not determined until this week.

Going into the last games, a number of scenarios were possible, two-way tie for first, two-way tie for second -- everyone was anxiously awaiting the outcome.

The Lady Wolves claimed a 19-0 win over Abbeville in their last outing, completing their district slate at 7-3.

Both Notre Dame and Kaplan won their last games of the district slate, both finishing 8-2 in league play. By sweeping both league games against Kaplan, the Lady Pios will take the #1 spot as district champion and an automatic berth into seeding for the playoff bracket today. The Lady Pirates will carry the runner-up designation and are also assured of a post season spot, followed closely by the Lady Wolves with power point standings.

Coaches were scheduled to meet today (Thursday) to seed the 32-team field of the state playoffs. All three teams will more than likely be in action Monday or Tuesday in first-round play.

Wolves

The Rayne High Baseball Team, presently at 4-2 in district) hosted Westminster Tuesday in a non-district contest.

The Wolves claimed a 12-2 win as the game was halted with the 10-run rule in five innings.

Collecting the win on the mound was Wolf Tyler Venable.

Eric Miller was 3-for-3 on the day with five RBIs.

The Wolves will return to district action today (Thursday) when they travel to Crowley for their second-round matchup against Notre Dame at 6 p.m.
