Lady Wolves play in Holiday Shootout
PONCHATOULA – Coach Amy Willie and her Loranger Lady Wolves are gearing up for what looks to be another tough battle in district 10-3A. The Lady Wolves are coming off a season in which they advanced to the Class 3A Regional Round.
Loranger will look to take things a few steps further this season after suffering a second round playoff loss to Marksville. To get ready for a tough district grind, the Lady Wolves have been playing some of the best girl’s basketball teams in the state.
Last week Loranger wrapped up play in the Ponchatoula Holiday Shootout at Ponchatoula High School. Some of the notable teams in the tournament included host Ponchatoula, Teurlings Catholic, Albany, Lafayette and St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Lady Wolves fell to New Iberia 46-41 in a tightly contested game. Loranger fell behind early in the game but stormed back to make a run at victory. The Lady Jackets built a 24-15 halftime lead but the Lady Wolves closed the gap by ending the game on a 26-22 run.
Sophomore Kimberly Culbreath paced the Lady Wolves as the team’s high scorer and Junior Sara Boyette added eight points. The Lady Wolves then took on Teurlings Catholic in a game that went down to the wire.
Down seven points late in the game the Lady Wolves rallied but their comeback bid fell a little short as Teurlings held on for a slim 40-39 win over Loranger. Kimberly Culbreath led the Lady Wolves with 12 points and Junior Point Guard Baileigh Bankston added 11.
The Lady Wolves are now set for the District 10-3A opener which takes place next week as they open the district slate against the Jewel Sumner Lady Cowgirls.
