Lady Wolves set for 3A Playoffs

LORANGER – The Loranger Lady Wolves are kind of in a holding pattern right now.  The Lady Wolves Softball Team needed a big win to advance to the Class 3A playoffs and they got it.

Now Loranger will use this week to rest up and get ready for the 3A playoffs which begin next week. “We’re kind of beat up right now. We have some players that need time to heal from injuries and we are going to take a few days to get ready for the post season,” said Wolves Coach Donald Usry.

The Lady Wolves season was on the line last week as they faced Sumner in a key district 10-3A contest. The Lady Wolves came up with a big 8-2 win over Sumner to secure second place in district 10-3A and lock up another playoff berth.

The Lady Wolves will learn Friday which team they will face in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs which begin next Tuesday. Loranger is now 14-9 overall on the season and they posted a 7-3 district mark this season as well.

The Lady Wolves also picked up an easy 12-0 win over Independence earlier in the week to set up their big game with Sumner. Coach Usry says that his team is playing well and now they will use some off time to practice and focus on the playoffs.

The Lady Wolves also had one of their best players sign a scholarship last week. Emily Balfantz signed a scholarship to play for the Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears Softball Team.

Emily is one of the best overall players in district 10-3A. “Emily is a leader on and off the field of play. She is tough and she really loves playing the game,” Usry said. Balfantz is the Lady Wolves Team Capitan and she enters the 2009 post season with a .522 batting average.

“She is one of the better players in our district and she is a solid catcher. Emily leads by example and I can see her playing softball for a long time on the college level.” Balfantz broke her nose in a game versus Albany but begged her coach not to take her out of the game.

“She never came out of the game. She is a great competitor and she works very hard to become a better player each day.” Emily also carries a 3.9 Grade Point Average and she currently has a 91% fielding percentage was and picks off would be base runners at a rate of 60%.
