Three first-inning runs helped the No. 21-ranked Lady Wolves to a 5-4 win at North DeSoto on Monday in the opening round of the 3A State Playoffs.

The excitement of the day came in the final inning as the No. 12-ranked hosts scored two runs and then loaded up the bases with two outs on the scoreboard. Rayne hurler Kelcie Bourgeois collected herself and struck out the final batter for the bi-district win with one of her five K’s of the day.

“Kelcie pitched a great game, even when her nerves appeared to be getting the best of her in the last inning after walking in a run with bases loaded,” stated Rayne Head Coach Deserea Dunn of her starter. “She did a good job and pulled out the win.”

The Lady Wolves took an early lead in the contest, scoring three solid runs in the opening inning of play as Katelyn LeDoux stole home, Amanda Bourque slapped in Katie Benoit on an RBI, and Kristin Gaspard tagged home on a fly ball to centerfield by Cecily Schexnyder for a quick 3-0 Rayne lead.

The Lady Wolves added two additional runs in the third inning, answered by two runs by North DeSoto for a 5-2 Rayne lead.

The Lady Wolves were not able to muster additional runs the remainder of the ballgame but held on for the 1-point win.

On offense, Dunn stated, “We stayed very disciplined at the plate and didn’t chase anything out of the strike zone. Every inning we were able to get runners on base, but we still left too many runners in scoring position. Hopefully that will improve in the next round.”

Schexnyder led the Lady Wolves with 2 hits, 2 RBIs and a double at the plate. Whitney Fontenot had 1 hit and 1 RBI on the day, Bourque slapped in an RBI, Benoit tagged 2 hits, while LeDoux, Alex Peltier, Blair Bergeron and Kristin Gaspard with 1 hit each.

“The future looks good for this team,” Dunn commented on her Lady Wolves. “Where we sit in the bracket is pretty good.”

The Lady Wolves will host No. 5-ranked Jena in the regional round of the 2013 state softball playoffs. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday afternoon at Rayne’s Gossen Park.

With a regional win on Friday, the Lady Wolves will travel to Frasch Park in Sulphur for the quarterfinal round of the 2013 LHSAA Softball State Tournament. The quarterfinal game will be played against the winner of the E.D. White and North Vermilion contest.

vs Cecilia

During a marathon warmup game last Wednesday, the Lady Wolves needed 14 innings to score a 2-0 win over Cecilia High School.

Bourgeois went the distance for Rayne on the mound as she fanned four batters in the 14-inning bananza.

With a triple by Katelyn LeDoux who eventually score on an error, Blair Bergeron slapped a homerun over the right field wall for the 2-0 win.

Also collecting hits for the Lady Wolves were Cecily Schexnyder (2 hits, double) and Kristin Gaspard (double).
