Landry's 70 years honored

CROWLEY – It isn’t every day that an attorney is honored for spending 70 years of his or her life practicing law.

But the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA) recently did just that at it’s midyear meeting and among the 70 year honorees was Crowley’s own John Landry Jr.

Landry started his studies at what is now known as ULL and received his undergraduate degree from the school. From their he moved on to LSU.

Not long after passing the bar exam, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served for about five years. He returned to Crowley in 1946 and has practiced law in the city since.

“It’s very rewarding to have been practicing law for all this time,” said Landry.

Landry knew for quite some time that he would become a lawyer someday.

“I always felt I was going to go to law school.”

Landry now practices law with his two sons, Michael and Jimmy, and his daughter, Anne, also works for the Landry, Landry & Landry firm, rounding out what has now become a family business.

In his 70 years of law, Landry has seen the 15th judicial district, which Acadia Parish is in, grow significantly. He recalled that when he first started there were only two judges in the entire district, one in Abbeville and one in Lafayette. Now, however, there are far more than just two.

“I love to practice law,” he said. Landry also joked that it gives him something to do each day instead of just sitting at home watching TV, which he knows he couldn’t do all day.

Landry comes into the office every day, at least for a few hours. And while he loves practicing law and planned on doing what he loved for as long as he could, Landry says he could have never guessed that he would have been practicing law into his 90s as he is today.

The LSBA recognizes its members each year who have reached half a century and beyond in their professional careers were honored during the association’s midyear meeting. During a special reception, 225 bar members were recognized for their years of service to the legal profession. In total, 11 LSBA members were honored for the 70 year mark.
