Leadership Excel studies local government

Leadership EXCEL participants from Acadia and Jeff Davis Parishes began their session recently at the Jeff Davis Parish Courthouse with a presentation by District Attorney Michael Cassidy who spoke on the working relationship of his office with other parish entities.

Also included in the courthouse tour were presentations by Assessor Donald Kratzer, Clerk of Court’s office, Missy Gary, Sheriff’s office Suzette Coker, and the Registrar of Voter Registration, Lorainne Dees.

The goal of the session was to understand the role of local governmental jurisdictions in our society, the services they provide, and how they interact.

Returning to Crowley, the next stop was the Detention Center where an impressive tour was conducted.

During lunch at Crowley City Hall, Architect Steve Oubre of New Iberia spoke to the group about his concept of developing neighborhoods, as contrasted with separate subdivisions and industrial and retail centers.

A tour of the 911 office, conducted by Mary Richard, Board Member of EXCEL followed.

The last event of the day was a Mock Trial in which Judge John Trahan presided. Participants served as jurors.

Facilitators for the session were Board members Allison Clarke, Donna Collins, Mary Richard, and Peggy Sandidge, coordinator..

The next session is scheduled for February 17 when the group will study Criminal Justice with a tour of Angola.

The Leadership EXCEL program is jointly sponsored by the Crowley Chamber of Commerce and the Jeff Davis Business Alliance.
