Legion Post Honors WWII Veterans

During the monthly meeting of Arceneaux Post 77, American Legion, held Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Legion Home in Rayne, veterans of World War II were honored as special guests.
Commander Pete Melancon and Americanism Chairman Rodney J. Trahan welcomed the large group of WWII veterans to the meeting, acknowledging the privilege of their attendance just prior to the annual observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11th.
Included in the group of honored guests were John Shelton (3-war veteran), Lula Roach Shelton, Wilson Thibodeaux, Dolze Touchet, W.F. “Dub” Laurents, Orise Boudreaux, Charles “Moon” Chappuis, Leo Spaetgens, Lawrence Guidry, Pridgen Fontenot, Daniel “Nappie” Landry, William “Kootsie” Simoneaux, Lawrence Spaetgens, Dan Leleux, Harris Schexneyder, Andrus Fontenot, Ed Boudreaux, Rodney J. Trahan (3-war veteran) and Joseph Richard (Pearl Harbor survivor).
Additional guests in attendance were Post 15 Commander Jack Habetz of Crowley, Retired Commander James Gaines U.S. Navy, and Retired Col. Lorraine Shelton Gaines U.S. Air Force.
Raymond Thevis gave the memorial report, reading a thank you note received from the family of the late Ernest Suiter.
Membership Chairman Ray Olinger reported 220 memberships were paid to date, approximately 67%.
During the service officer’s report given by Al Leger, it was reported that Agent Orange coverage for Vietnam War veterans can apply for benefits related to three new illnesses, Parkerson’s, B-Cel Diabetes, and Ascemic Heart Disease.
The entertainment report was given by Hiliary Olinger, who noted that plans are progressing for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration and dance to be held at the Legion Home. A complete report and tickets for the event will be available at the December meeting.
Americanism Chairman Rodney J. Trahan reminded World War II veterans of the last Honoraire trip to Washington, D.C. planned for April of 2010. All WWII veterans are urged to apply for the free trip.
Trahan also gave a list of the upcoming events planned in observance of Veterans Day. Local and area schools and churches are planning programs and veterans are urged to attend at least one.
Announcement was made of the 2009 Rayne High School Legion Oratorical Contest planned Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Legion Home in Rayne. The contest begins at 10 a.m. and all Legionnaires are urged to attend and lend a helping hand.
Legionnaires were also invited to attend a Veterans Day observance to be held Tuesday,Nov. 10, at the Veterans Home in Jennings.
Commander Melancon announced the cancellation of the monthly Jam Session for November. The event will resume in December.
Post 15 Commander Jack Habetz informed the membership of a new Motorcycle Club for legionnaires. For more information, contact Al Gibson or Lee Wright.
In conjunction with Veterans Day, it was announced that free meals will be served to veterans on Nov. 11 at Applebee’s, and on Nov. 16 at Golden Corral.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned, color retired, and a delicious meal was provided by the Legion cooks.
