Local athletes earn All-Academic honors

BATON ROUGE – Based on the philosophy that high school classrooms were built before the playing fields and arenas, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) instituted its scholar-athlete program in 1986 featuring the sport of football and expanded the program to include girls’ and boys’ basketball and girls’ volleyball in 1987. Softball was added in 1995 and baseball in 1997.

This year, 379 female athletes will receive recognition in the sport of girls’ softball; 339 female athletes in the sport of girls’ track; 256 male athletes in the sport of boys’ track; 28 female athletes in the sport of girls’ bowling; 20 male athletes in the sport of boys’ bowling; 6 female athletes in the sport of girls’ gymnastics; 3 male athletes in the sport of boys’ gymnastics; 14 female athletes in the sport of girls’ golf; 10 male athletes in the sport of boys’ golf; 44 female athletes in the sport of girls’ tennis; 49 male athletes in the sport of boys’ tennis and 359 male athletes in the sport of baseball. All of the other boys’ and girls’ composite all-academic teams were recognized and honored during the state championships for their respective sports.

Not only are the student-athletes honored in their respective class or divisions, but composite squads have also been selected from the players who scored the highest grade point averages from all classes/divisions in a sport.

This year’s composite All-Academic, All-State squads will honor the following: Softball will feature 73 student-athletes, girls’ track will feature 64, boys’ track will feature 38, girls’ bowling will feature 12, and boys’ bowling will feature 12, girls’ gymnastics will feature six, boys’ gymnastics will feature three, girls’ golf will feature nine, and boys’ golf will feature 10, girls’ tennis will feature 44, and boys’ tennis will feature 29 while 59 have been chosen to represent baseball.

Members of each composite squad will receive special recognition at the 2013-2014 LHSAA state championship events.

To qualify for an All-Academic, All-State team, a student-athlete must have achieved a three-year cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and must have been a member of his or her schools’ team for two years.

In reviewing this year’s scholar-athlete program, LHSAA Executive Director Kenny Henderson stated, “We want all of the student-athletes in Louisiana to realize and understand that the educational foundation and values that they receive in our member high schools will be life-lasting and will serve them long after their high school playing days are over.”
