Local trio names to AAA All-State squad

CROWLEY – After stellar prep basketball seasons and helping lead their respective teams into postseason play, three Acadia Parish standouts – Church Point’s Shalen Handy, Iota’s Allison Baggett and Crowley’s Dexter Scott - have been honored by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Handy headlines the group, earning second-team All-State honors on teams chosen by the LSWA and released recently. Baggett and Scott were each named to the honorable mention list.

On the girls’ side, Handy helped lead the Lady Bears to a 19-11 finish while nearly averaging a double-double per outing. The senior forward scored 15.4 points and pulled down nine rebounds per game in earning District 5-AAA MVP honors.

Church Point placed second in Distict 5-AAA behind Northwest and was the only team to defeat the Lady Raiders during district action. The Lady Bears topped Patterson in the first round of the playoffs before falling to eventual state champion Capitol.

Baggett helped lead Iota to a remarkable 24-14 record in what was thought to be a rebuilding year for the Lady Bulldogs after losing all five starters to graduation the previous year.

The freshman guard poured in 14.8 points while averaging 4.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game. She was also the only Lad y Bulldog selected to the 4-AAA All-District first-team.

Iota placed third in its district behind Jennings and St. Louis. Iota lost to Jennings in the second round of the playoffs. Jennings advanced to the AAA semifinals where they were ousted by eventual runnerup St. Louis.

Capitol’s Dominique Robinson, who helped Capitol to two state titles and a runnersup finish in the past three years, was selected as the Outstanding Player on the girls’ squad.

The 6-foot senior, who scored 31 points in the title-game win over St. Louis and was voted the championship MVP, averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds on the season.

Also earning first-team honors for the girls were Jennings’ Kiara Etienne, Ursuline’s Liann McCarthy, Kaplan’s Tina Roy and Wossman’s Judy Jones.

Robinson is joined by her coach Alvin Steward, who received the Coach of the Year honor after leading the Lady Lions to their fourth state title in five seasons with a 28-4 record.

Joining Handy on the second team were Cecilia’s Bianca Davis, St. Louis’ Jazzmin Smith, Madison’s Tequilla Vaughn and Bolton’s Natosha Gottlieb.

On the boys’ side, Scott led Crowley in scoring with 17 points per game in helping guide the Gents to an overall record of 21-10. The District 5-AAA MVP also averaged three assists, six re bounds and two steals while shooting 82 percent from the free throw line during his senior campaign.

The Gents, which finished second in league play behind Northwest, slipped past E.D. White in the first round of the playoffs before falling to eventual state runnersup Vidalia in the regional round.

Vidalia’s Vikings came one game short of a state title, falling to Richwood in the AAA boys’ title game.

The Vikings were led by junior Gary Stewart, who was voted the Outstanding Player.

Vidalia’s Robert Sanders was named the Coach of the Year after leadi ng the Vikings to a 30-2 record and their first state championship appearance since 1979.

State champion Richwood placed AAA title-game MVP LaDon Carter on the first team. The junior led the Rams throughout district and the playoffs with 17.8 points per game, including eight dunks in the title victory over Vidalia.

Also earning first team honors were Plaquemine’s Maquel Robinson, Cecilia’s Donovan Williams and Wossman’s Jonathan Ross.

Second-team members include Patterson’s Terrence Johnson, Baker’s Denzel Hall, Iowa’s Aubery Matthews, Avoyelles’ Chris Sampson and Winnfield’s Gerald Hartwell.
