Locals tabbed to Class AAA All-State team

CROWLEY – Notre Dame and Crowley High both are represented on this year’s Class AAA All-State football team announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

So are familiar teams like Lutcher, Redemptorist, Parkview Baptist and Westlake.

Notre Dame, the Class AAA state runnersup, landed three players on the squad - Seth Fruge, John Graf and Hunter Stover - while Crowley High nabbed one spot in Jordan Ancelet.

Fruge, who logged 121 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery during the regular season, made the defensive unit at linebacker. He was joined at the position by Cecilia’s Marcus Wiltz, Winnfield’s Jarvis Powell and Lutcher’s Blake Rome.

Graf played on the defensive line for the Pios, but made the All-State team at the athlete position. During his senior campaign, Graf recorded 54 tackles, six sacks and one forced fumble.

Stover made the team as a kicker. The junior blasted nearly 94 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks in 2008 and also connected on four of his nine field goal attempts, his longest a school record 58-yarder in the state quarterfinals against Richwood.

Stover also played linebacker, racking up 48 tackles and four sacks.

Ancelet, the 5-AAA defensive player of the year, anchored Crowley’s defensive line and was a terror to opposing offensive linemen with his quickness and agility. The senior defensive tackle recorded 85 tackles, 11 sacks, caused nine fumbles and had three fumble recoveries in helping lead the Gents back to the state playoffs after the missed out in 2007.

Joining Ancelet on the line are Cecilia’s Gadge Norris, Westlake’s Scotty Foy and Richwood’s Rashad Givins.
