Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge

By Staff Sgt. Rachel A. Hall

Minden – Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge cadet Blake A. Arceneaux of St. Martinville was recently awarded the rank of five stars, “top 10” academically, most outstanding of his platoon, most athletic, and was recognized for his achievement on the YCP color guard team.

“I came to YCP to just get my GED, but I am leaving with an array of tools to help me succeed in life,” said Arceneaux.

According to the post residential coordinator the Youth Challenge Program has proven to be a successful tool for parents with troubled teens. The program consists of a five month residential phase and a 12 month post- residential phase. The teens decide for themselves if they want to attend the program. While attending the program cadets have the opportunity to earn their GED and acquire skills that will help them be successful after graduation.

The rank of five stars is based on cadet’s academic and physical accomplishments, as well as, a clear discipline record. Arceneaux achieved “top 10” of his class academically. This is achieved by succeeding in the “Academic Excellence” area of the eight core components the cadets live by during the five month residential phase. He was awarded most athletic and most outstanding for his platoon. This award is selected by the cadre of each platoon and is based on the cadet who performs his/her best in being a leader and a follower.

Arceneaux was also recognized for his accomplishment on the YCP color guard. The cadets attend numerous events in the community and earn many community service hours throughout the cycle.

Arceneaux joined the Youth Challenge Program last February. He is a reflection of the good things the Youth Challenge Program instills in young people.

Arceneaux is the son of Scott and Becky Arceneaux of St. Martinville. Following his July 26 graduation, Arceneaux return to St. Martinville and plans on attending Louisiana Technical College at Lafayette and majoring in mechanics.
