LSU begins World Series play Sunday

BATON ROUGE -- Fourth-seeded LSU (57-9) will take on UCLA (44-17) on Sunday at 7 p.m. CT in the opening round of the 2013 College World Series, it was announced late Monday.

The matchup between the Tigers and Bruins will be televised by ESPN2 and online via WatchESPN. The LSU Sports Radio Network broadcast will begin at 6:30 p.m. on network affiliates including Eagle 98.1 in Baton Rouge and free in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net/live.

UCLA will serve as the visiting team in Sunday’s game while the Tigers will be the home team.

LSU (57-9) won all three games of the Baton Rouge Regional before sweeping Oklahoma in the Baton Rouge Super Regional to advance to the College World Series.

UCLA (44-17) reached its second straight College World Series and third in four years by sweeping the Los Angeles Regional and defeating Cal State Fullerton at the Fullerton Super Regional. The Bruins joined Florida and South Carolina as the only schools in the country to reach the College World Series at least three times in the last four years. Head coach John Savage, who became UCLA’s all-time winningest postseason manager on Saturday, has also become just one of 10 Pac-12 coaches all-time to lead their teams to back-to-back College World Series appearances. Savage led the Bruins to the finals of the 2010 College World Series before guiding UCLA to return appearances in 2012 and 2013.

The first game on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., as Oregon State (49-11)will face Mississippi State (48-18). Saturday’s second game features first-time participant, Indiana (48-14) against Louisville (51-12) and is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

The doubleheader on Sunday features the winner of the No. 1 national seed North Carolina (56-10)/South Carolina (43-19) Super Regional vs. North Carolina State (49-14) at 2 p.m., and No. 4 national seed LSU (57-9) squaring off against UCLA (44-17) at 7 p.m.

The losers of Saturday’s two games will play one another at 2 p.m. on Monday, while Saturday’s winners face off at 7 p.m. Monday. The losers of Sunday’s games will play each other at 2 p.m. Tuesday, while Sunday’s winners meet Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The winners of the two brackets will play best-of-three championship finals, with the first game set for 7 p.m. on Monday, June 24. The second game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, while the third and deciding game (if necessary) is slated for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26.
