LSU's Gibbs, Landry taken in third round

BATON ROUGE -- LSU catcher Micah Gibbs and outfielder Leon Landry were taken in the third round of the the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.

Gibbs was the 97th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs. A switch hitter who flirted with batting .400 in 2010, he completed the Tigers battery that was among the Top 100 picks. Junior righthander Anthony Ranaudo who was taken 39th overall in Monday night's compensation round A.

Landry heard his name 12 picks later in the third round on the conference call of the draft. The junior outfielder was taken off the board by the Los Angeles Dodgers as the 109th overall pick.

Landry, who was taken in the 36th round of the 2007 draft, batted .338 for the Tigers during his junior season. His outstanding play in center field made highlight reels throughout his career at LSU.

Ranaudo, Gibbs and Landry maintain a season of eligibility at LSU.

LSU's first signee selected on day 2 of the draft was Barbe High School shortstop Garin Cecchini, who was picked by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round, the 143rd overall pick. Cecchini missed his high school senior season with a knee injury.
