Mrs. Lula Mae Joiner Wright
Homegoing services were held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church for Mrs. Lula Mae Joiner Wright, 84, who passed away on Wednesday, September 24 at the Eunice Extended Care Hospital in Eunice, LA.
The officiant was Rev. Gerald Perkins, Seventh District Baptist Association President and Pastor of the Union Baptist Church in Jennings, Louisiana.
Mrs. Wright worked untiringly and was a devoted member of the Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church, under the leadership of her late father, Dr. I. J. Joiner and continued to serve under the leadership of her son, Rev. Michael C. Wright.
In the church, she served in many capacities. For many years she served as: the Superintendent of the Sunday school, Choir President, a deaconess in the church, advisor of the Young Adult Mission, Director of the Area 5 mission, and Vice President of the Women’s Auxiliary for the Seventh District Baptist Association.
Mrs. Wright worked as an educator for the Vermilion Parish School Board for 39 years. She also served as the first black supervisor in the school system.
She is survived by her four sons, Murphy Jr., Marcus, Mervine, all of Dallas, Texas and Rev. Michael Wright of Abbeville, and two daughters, Catherine Donaldson of Dallas, Texas and Carolyn Teel of Abbeville, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
