Lytle to conduct fiddle workshop

MAMOU - J. Fred Lytle of Shreveport will conduct a fiddle-making workshop at the Mamou Cajun Music Festival Saturday, August 30, from 2 to 2:45 p.m.

Lytle will discuss how he makes LytleLins™, that is, fiddles of his own special designs. A woodworker all his life, Lytle was 86 years old when he made the first LytleLin™. Now, almost five years later, at age 90, he is working on number 24 and going strong! Having a penchant for experimenting with new and unconventional designs, Lytle’s creations are notable for their unusual shapes and features. Some are violin-shaped, some guitar-shaped, some just plain unique. He also experiments with different woods, and hand carves all the supporting fixtures (fingerboard, pegs, tailpiece, chin rest).

Charlie Daniels, Doug Kershaw, Dale Morris Jr. and Mark Young are among the professionals who have played a LytleLin™. They have all been complimentary of the instruments, especially their tones.

Whether you are a woodworker, a musician, or just curious about how LytleLins™ are made, this workshop will be of interest. A number of these instruments will be on display throughout most of the festival.
