The Mamou Town Council, during a special meeting Thursday, May 8, appointed Helen Saucier to serve the remainder of her late husband, J.L. Saucier’s, term as District Four alderman.
The council officially declared the District Four alderman seat as vacant before making the appointment. Saucier was suggested and chosen to fill in for her late husband by a unanimous vote. No other names were mentioned for the seat.
A swearing-in ceremony will be held in the near future. However, an official date had not been set.
The council also named alderman Joe Paul Deshotels as the new police commissioner, a position J.L. Saucier held for many years.
J.L. Saucier died Thursday, May 1, at his home of an apparent cardiac arrest. He had served District Four for more than 21 years having won the seat six consecutive times since he first took office January 1987.
