Mamou ladies use big inning to advance
By: LANCE REED
The Mamou Lady Demons earned a first-round victory over the Lakeside Lady Warriors Tuesday. The Mamou girls used a three-run third inning to take the momentum. The win keeps the local girls on track to make it back to the state tournament again this year. They will travel to DeQuincy tomorrow to meet the Lady Tigers who beat Loyola 5-2 Tuesday night.
The Lady Warriors scored in the top of the first inning. Two singles and a sacrifice allowed Lakeside to gain their only lead of the game. Mamou senior pitcher Sadie Fontenot battled back and gave her team a chance to win the game. Fontenot went all seven innings. She allowed just three hits and fanned eight batters in the process.
Mamou tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Amanda Fontenot walked and later crossed the dish on a single from Amelia Soileau. The Lady Demons were far from done after they tied the game. Three more runs crossed the plate in their next trip to the plate.
Mollie Duplechain got the inning started with a leadoff triple. She found the plate on a double from Katy Landreneau. Amy Fontenot (3-4, RBI) drove home Landreneau with her first of three hits. Sadie Fontenot helped her cause in the inning. She singled to left field and scored Amy Fontenot, making it a 4-1 ball game.
Fontenot the Lady Demons remained in the driver’s seat. Lakeside found the plate one more time in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Warriors scored on a fielder’s choice combined with a passed ball and a single.
Mamou answered back quickly in the bottom of the fifth frame. Courtney Tate and Amanda Fontenot hit back-to-back singles. Both runners moved over into scoring position on a sacrifice from Kristie Soileau. Amelia Soileau’s fielder’s choice pushed Tate home, making it a 5-2 ball game.
Mamou and DeQuincy will do battle tomorrow at 5 p.m.
