Man arrested for leaving child unattended in vehicle
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office agents have arrested a man for leaving his child alone in a vehicle while shopping at a local grocery store. Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that on February 25, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Narcotic Agents arrested Mikhyl Rendell Parnell, 27, of Amite, in the Amite Winn Dixie parking lot for possession of drug paraphernalia, four FTA's and child desertion.
Agents were sitting in the parking lot when a Mercury Mountaineer, driven by Parnell pulled into the parking lot. Parnell parked the vehicle and exited and went into the store. As Parnell pulled into the parking lot, agents could see the vehicle was also occupied by a baby in a car seat. After Parnell went into the store, agents approached the vehicle and could see a small child still sitting in the car seat. Several agents stayed with the baby while another agent went inside to get Parnell. Parnell was brought outside at which time he admitted that the child was six-months-old and he had just gone inside to purchase cigarettes.
Agents searched the vehicle and found a syringe above the visor. Parnell also had four outstanding warrants (driving under suspension, theft, theft of utilities and trespassing) for his arrest. The mother of the child was brought to the scene at which time the six-month-old child was released into her custody
