Mayor wants fraud query response or he's not paying city attorney

City Attorney Jacque Pucheu said he and attorney Vernon McManus have been asked to meet with Mayor Bob Morris to review a matter of "some concern to the mayor."

"I do not believe until a thorough review of the matter has been made that I should make any further comment," Pucheu said.

Morris was more specific. In his opinion there is evidence of contract fraud "involving three entities" and he wants Pucheu to provide information on how to proceed.

The mayor said Thursday that he had told Pucheu "that if he hasn't done something by Monday, March 9, then I'll stop signing any checks payable to him, unless or until ordered to do so by a court of law."

Pucheu is paid a monthly retainer by the city.

Morris said earlier in the week that he believes contract fraud in the amount of $150,000 occurred in a city transaction prior to his taking office.

He said he has communicated three times with Pucheu about it. Prior to that, the St. Landry Parish District Attorney's Office declined to take up the matter, Morris said.

Butting heads with Pucheu is nothing new for the mayor. He created a stir previously when he questioned the attorney's performance and suggested he resign.

Pucheu in turn demanded a public apology.

The backlash to the mayor's assertions overwhelmingly favored the attorney.

Ultimately, the two moved on and there have been no clashes, at least no public ones, since.
