McDaniel resigns as assistant police chief

Ville Platte Police Chief Neal Lartigue asked for the resignation of Assistant Chief Kevin McDaniel Monday morning after it was determined McDaniel forged Lartigue’s name for overtime benefits.

Over six pay periods, a total of 59 hours of overtime were incorrectly paid to McDaniel for a total of approximately $1,400. Thirteen overtime sheets appeared to have been filed by McDaniel, according to Lartigue, who was shocked by the allegations.

“I called for his resignation (Monday) or termination in the morning (Tuesday),” Lartigue said, “and asked the money be paid back.”

McDaniel was placed on an indefinite leave of absence by the department Friday, January 30, after the theft of overtime was determined. “We were able to catch it quickly,” Lartigue said.

McDaniel has served this community as a police officer for 29 years. His career with the department began in January 1980 as a communications officer. He worked his way through the ranks of police officer and investigator to sergeant, shift supervisor on patrol, lieutenant and then assistant chief, a position he has held since his promotion by the council on September 11, 2007.

The information will be turned over to the district attorney’s office for review.

Lartigue said the council will possibly appoint an assistant chief at its next meeting. That appointee will have to successfully take and pass the civil service examination for the position, since it is a promotional position.
