McNeese Cowgirls defeat Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES – McNeese State’s Cowgirls ended a six year losing streak in Natchitoches here Saturday afternoon with a 68-49 Southland Conference women’s basketball victory over Northwestern State. The last McNeese win in Natchitoches was during the 2004-05 season.

The win improved the Cowgirls to 13-5 overall and more importantly kept McNeese undefeated in Southland Conference play at 5-0. The game also extended the Cowgirls’ winning streak to six games.

“This was another great team effort. I thought we really showed some toughness this afternoon,” said head coach Brooks Donald Williams.

Kendra Wells recorded her second double-double of the season and career 13th with 13 points and a season high 16 rebounds. Wells was five of nine from the field and was perfect from the free throw line, making all three attempts.

Ashlyn Baggett scored a game high 22 points on four of 12 from the field and 11 of 13 from the charity stripe. Ne’Aisha Anderson pitched in 12, all coming from three-pointers and nine came in the first half.

McNeese outrebounded Northwestern State 43-30 and got 20 points from the bench. The Cowgirls caused Northwestern State into 17 turnovers and scored 20 points off of those miscues.

McNeese never trailed in the second half and held as much as a double digit lead for most of the half. The Cowgirls took a double digit lead three minutes into the second half and never led that double digit lead slip.

McNeese held a 33-25 halftime lead behind a 40.0 field goal shooting percent. The Cowgirls shot 33.3 percent from three-point range and were perfect from the free throw line, making all four attempts.

McNeese took a quick 3-0 lead on a Ashlyn Baggett three-pointer in the Cowgirls’ opening possession of the game. The game went back and fourth and neither team led by five or more points in the fist seven minutes of the game. With Northwestern State leading 13-12 with 12:54 McNeese took the lead 14-13 on a jumper by Raiyawna Gatling and never trailed the rest of the way. The Cowgirls held a 10 point lead off of Ne’Aisha Anderson’s second three-pointer of the half. Anderson scored nine points in the half, all coming from behind the arc.

McNeese will travel to Nicholls Wednesday and then at Central Arkansas on Saturday for key Southland Conference games.
