Meridional poll says half cent sales tax will not pass

Vermilion Parish residents are being ask to go to the voting booths Saturday to vote on a 1/2 cent sales tax dedicated to school board employee raises.

The polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

For the last two weeks, the Meridional was asking readers who read the Meridional’s website: if they were going to vote on the 1/2 cent sales tax dedicated to the school board raises.

There were 117 who voted and, 49 percent said they would vote “no” for the tax, while 43 percent said they would vote “yes.”

Eight percent were still not sure how they would vote.

If approved, the sales tax would bring in around $3 million a year which would be used to give teachers and support workers such as bus drivers and janitors a pay raise. It would also help the School Board get an extra $1.5 million in MFP funding from the state.

If the tax is not approved, the school board is projecting a shortfall of close to $2 million in the upcoming budget. Programs and possibly jobs could be cut to offset the loss in funds.
