Midland, Church Point sweep top honors

CROWLEY – Midland’s B.J. Cormier and Church Point’s Shalen Handy garnered numerous honors for their performances during the 2008-09 basketball season and today they earned another - Most Valuable Player on this year’s Post-Signal All-Acadia Parish teams.

Cormier played a key role in Midland’s success, averaging 17.3 points, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per contest.

He was most effective from long range, shooting 44.6 percent from beyond the three-point line (83-186). He finished the season with 468 total points.

Handy was also a force to be reckoned with, averaging 15.4 points and nine rebounds a game. The District 5-AAA MVP also totaled four blocks and four steals per game.

Their respective coaches, Todd Briley (Midland) and Timmy Jones (Church Point) were also recognized on the All-Parish team as Coaches of the Year.

Briley led his young squad to a 31-6 record and the District 7-B title while starting just one senior. His squad earned the No. 3 seed in the Class B playoffs. The Rebels were eliminated in the second round by Mount Hermon.

Jones guided his group to a 19-11 record overall and a second-place finish in District 5-AAA. The Lady Bears were the lone team to defeat league champion Northwest, doing so on the Lady Raiders’ home court.

The Lady Bears earned the No. 19 seed in the Class AAA playoffs and were eliminated by eventual state champion Capitol in the second round by a slim margin of 65-62 in overtime.

Joining Briley and Cormier on the boys’ team are fellow Midland Rebel Miles Sonnier, Crowley’s Dexter Scott, Notre Dame’s Nick Zaunbrecher, Church Point’s Torey Boudreaux and Iota’s Jordan Sylestine.

Sonnier, the District 7-B MVP, averaged 17.9 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 3.7 assists per outing. The standout forward finished his junior campaign with 448 total points.

Scott, the District 5-AAA MVP, helped lead Crowley to a runnersup finish in league play by averaging 17 points, three assists, six rebounds and two steals. The senior guard was also automatic from the free throw line, shooting 82 percent from the charity stripe.

Zaunbrecher was Notre Dame’s top scorer, averaging 15.6 points while pulling down 8.7 rebounds. He also averaged 2.4 steals and two assists.

Boudreaux averaged 13.3 points and eight rebounds while Sylestine had 14.1 points, 5.2 assists and 7.2 rebounds.

The honorable mention list is made up of Midland’s Colby Gantt, Crowley’s Michael Harmon, Notre Dame’s Charlie Ropp, Church Point’s Kaliup Citizen, Rayne’s Darius Bonhomme, Northside’s Pierce Rivera and Iota’s Colby Wickman.

Joining Jones and Handy on the girls’ team are Church Point’s Deniseo Citizen, Crowley’s Sharae Henry, Notre Dame’s Taylor Simon, Iota’s Allison Baggett and Midland’s Sharae Primeaux.

Citizen led District 5-AAA in scoring with 15.6 points per game. She also averaged four rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Lady Bears’ point guard.

Henry, who was hampered by a foot injury for the last half of the season, totaled 11 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.6 steals for the CHS Ladies.

Simon led the Lady Pios into the playoffs for the second straight season, averaging 13.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.2 steals.

Baggett, a freshman guard, helped lead Iota back to postseason play by averaging 14.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.7 steals.

Primeaux wrapped up her senior season with 8.7 points and 6.4 assists in helping the Lady Rebels reach the Class B quarterfinals before falling to eventual state champion Fairview.

Earning honorable mention status on the girls’ team are Northside’s Tori Clement, Midland’s Patricia Garrie, Notre Dame’s Celia Charles and Kylie Pannell, Crowley’s Lavetta Chaisson, Rayne’s Trysteen Teer, Church Point’s Alicia Arceneaux and Iota’s Jade LeJeune.
