Midland cruises past Beau Chene in tourney opener

CROWLEY – The Midland Rebels kicked off the 2008 Notre Dame Invitational in style, cruising to a 73-32 victory over Beau Chene at A.B. Dore Gym.

With the victory, Midland improved to 8-2 on the season and earned a berth opposite Acadia Parish rival Crowley High yesterday in the second round of the tournament. Results of that game were not available at press time.

The winner of that contest will play in the championship game Saturday at 4:15 p.m. while the loser will play for third place at 1:45 p.m.

“We came out ready to play tonight,” said Midland Coach Todd Briley. “We really got after them in the first half.”

Midland trailed just once in the contest, falling behind 4-2 in the first minute before B.J. Cormier drained a three-pointer to put the Rebels up 5-4.

From there, Midland went on a 8-0 run to take a 13-4 advantage.

Midland’s intensity rose to a whole new level in the second quarter, both offensively and defensively. The Rebels forced the Gators into 13 turnovers in the fame and went on to outscore the Bears 32-4 and take a 45-6 advantage at the break. Miles Sonnier led the surge with 12 points.

Beau Chene played Midland to a 9-9 third quarter before the Rebels emptied the bench in the final stanza.

Reserves Andrew Hains and Michael Primeaux both scored in the frame as the Rebels outscored the Gators 19-14 to account for the final score.

“We really played well in the second quarter and jumped out to a big lead,” said Briley. “But in the second half, we kind of took our foot off the accelerator.”

Sonnier paced the Rebels with 26 points. Colby Gantt and Cormier also scored in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively.

Allen Fontenot chipped in nine points, Michael Vincent added four and TJ Gautreaux scored three. Hains and Primeaux each finished with two points.
