Midland improves to 2-0 with victory over Fairview
MIDLAND – The Fairview Panthers may have figured a way to shut down Midland forward Darren Arceneaux Tuesday, but they had no answer for Alan Vondenstein.
While Arceneaux, who scored 19 points in Midland ’s 85-37 victory over Rapides last week, was held to two points, Vondenstein poured in a game-high 25 points, leading the Rebels to a 65-50 over the Panthers.
Midland led 29-24 at the half and Fairview got within a basket in the third quarter before Vondenstein pumped in 11 points to extend the lead to 44-39.
The Panthers cut it to two early in the fourth quarter as well but back-to-back 3-pointers by Jake Gautreaux aided in a 21-11 run by the Rebels to end the game.
Andrew Hains and Chase Vincent followed Vondenstien with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Gautreaux pitched in nine points on three 3-pointers; Arceneaux and Michael Primeaux each scored two and Cody Stutes rounded out the scoring with one point.
The news was not as good for the Lady Rebels, who fell to five-time defending state champion Fairview, 79-28, in the opener.
The Rebels will be in action again Friday when they travel to Crowley to take on Northside Christian at 6 p.m. The Lady Rebels will play in the Hathaway tournament next week.
