Midland sweeps Rapides in season opener
MIDLAND – The Midland Rebels and Lady Rebels opened the 2011 prep basketball season with a bang, sweeping Rapides Tuesday evening at the Rebels’ home gym.
The Lady Rebels got the evening started with a 54-35 victory before the Rebels cruised to a surprisingly easy 85-37 win over the 2010 state finalist Mustangs.
In the girls’ game, Midland jumped out to 19-5 lead in the first quarter before Rapides got within five (21-16) with four minutes remaining in the half.
That was as close as the Lady Mustangs would get.
Midland scored seven unanswered points to take a 27-16 lead at the break before outscoring Rapides 27-19 in the second half.
Melody Hebert paced the Lady Rebels with 15 points and Tori Craigen added nine.
The Rebels took control early in the nightcap, jumping out to a 24-2 lead midway through the second quarter.
Midland led 53-24 after three quarters and then outscored Rapides 32-6 in the fourth.
Darren Arcenaux led a quartet of Rebels in double figures with 19 points. Michael Primeaux followed with 16 points, Chase Vincent added 14 and Jake Gautreaux scored 12.
The Rebels and Lady Rebels will be in action again Tuesday when they play host to Fairview .
