The annual Miss Merry Christmas Pageant which is one of the premier signals to the opening of the holiday season in the Rice

Capital will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Rice Festival Building, Crowley.

At this time there are twenty-one young ladies vying for the title of “Miss Merry Christmas”. Contestants are all first-time first grade students attending an elementary school in Crowley or other surrounding area schools.

This year marks the 43rd anniversary of the pageant, Beta Sigma Phi President Maureen Fontenot commented, “It is an honor and a privilege for our sisterhood to continue to sponsor and host this wonderful holiday event, as we have done for so many years. It represents to all of us one of the few remaining ‘innocent wide-eyed remembrances’ that these young ladies will be able to treasure for years to come. We are proud to be a part of that experience.”

Fontenot also noted that the sisters of Beta Sigma Phi will once again hold their annual raffle with proceeds contributed to one of Acadiana’s non-profit organizations. The chosen organization will be announced at a later date.

The prize being raffled off for this year’s donation raffle is a Christmas stocking filled with toys. Chances will be available at the pageant for $1 each.

As always, special guest of the event will be old Santa Claus himself. Children will have the opportunity to visit with jolly old St. Nick during intermission.

Each contestant will receive a certificate and an ornament as remembrance of their participation in the pageant.

The five finalists will also receive a trophy. In addition, the contestant named “Miss Merry Christmas” will receive a $50 savings bond.

All participants are invited to ride in the Christmas parade to be hold on December 4 at 6 p.m.. with “Miss Merry Christmas” and her court riding on Santa’s float.

Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Dolores Nutt’s School of Dance and Redemptorist Catholic’s Bell Choir.
