Montoucet speaks about focus at Rotary

CROWLEY – The guest speaker at Tuesday’s meeting of the Crowley Rotary Club was Jack Montoucet, state representative for District #42.
“We’re going to have a busy year in the legislature,” he began, and spoke briefly about the situations facing the state currently, including the budget shortfall and the planned education and healthcare cuts.
However, Rep. Montoucet went on to say that he has two things he plans to focus on that are closer to home. Namely, his goals to get Hwy 90 resurfaced and the pontoon bridge on Hwy 91 in Estherwood replaced with a more permanent structure. Montoucet stated that there was no reason, in this day and age, why there should be a pontoon bridge over the river. He also stated that this project could take a little time.
Also on Montoucet’s agenda in Baton Rouge is making sure that former state employees are able to get a reasonable retirement from the state, and cleaning up sites that the oil companies have been drilling on.
Montoucet stated that he currently thinks the upcoming legislature will focus on reducing the size of the state government.
He also mentioned a tourism bill he will be working on to benefit the parish.
Montoucet said his time in the legislature has been tough, but also a good learning experience.
“It’s been a learning curve for me,” said Montoucet.
