Morrow speaks at CAA’s March meeting
Juanita Morrow was the guest speaker at the March meeting of the Crowley Art Association.
President Isabella delaHoussaye welcomed the many members that were present. Brenda Istre, program co-chairman,
introduced the speaker.
Mrs. Morrow began her presentation by distributing a hand-out on her subject “Painting Faces”. This related to faces in fine art portraits. She explained her interest in this aspect of fine art. Her motivation to learn portrait painting was to preserve likenesses of her family for future generations. She first studied with Mark Gill, a successful self taught portrait painter.
Tony Bernard was her next teacher who gave her different aspects of portrait painting. She was influenced by painters Helen Van Wyke, John Singer Sargent and John Howard Sanden. Mrs. Morrow will present an exhibit of 19 portraits of Acadiana women who have contributed to the arts in Southwest Louisiana.
This exhibit will be on display in The Gallery throughout the month of April with a Gala to be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 6 – 8 p.m. The public is invited to see this exciting show.
During the workshop Mrs. Morrow said that when beginning to paint a portrait one must first have an accurate drawing of the face, measuring each feature including the eyes, nose, mouth, chin, ears and hair. Then study the colors of the face mapping out areas of lights and darks.
She uses a very good photograph, enlarges it and then copies it in black and white. This gives the areas of lights and darks clearly. She then discussed body tone, highlights, body shadow, reflective light and cast shadows. Through each she listed oil paint colors she uses.
She talked about doing the background and how important this is to the portrait colors. Following the discussion she showed two beautiful portraits she has painted. Others are also exhibited in The Gallery.
During the business meeting reports were made by the officers and committee chairmen. Brenda Istre said the next meeting will be held on Monday, April 13 and will be a field trip to Janelle’s Art Studio in Lafayette.
Members are to meet at The Gallery, have a brief business meeting and travel to Janelle’s for 1:30 p.m.
Works by students from Crowley High, Notre Dame and the Leap-up class from South Crowley Elementary were viewed by members after the meeting was adjourned.
Refreshments were served by Glenda Atkinson and Paula Gonzales.
