Mother, toddler killed in Crowley house fire

CROWLEY - A tragic fire which occurred on 1008 East Eighth St. in Crowley claimed the life of a young mother and her 23-month-old child early Thursday.

According to Crowley Fire Department spokesman Robert Burke the call came in at 2:50 a.m. from a Crowley Policeman who was on patrol in the area.

“By the time we arrived the back of the house was fully engulfed in flames,” he said. “It appeared as though the fire had been going for quite some time.”

The victims have been identified as Marie McDonald, 22, and her daughter Bayleigh.

According to a neighbor, Robert Quebedeaux, he was awakened when a police officer knocked on his door.

“I could see the glow coming through my window,” he said. “It lit up the entire room. When I went outside flames were shooting out the back of the house.”

“It’s just a shame,” he said. “I know the young lady’s boyfriend had just left to go to work at around 10:30 last night. He had to turn right back around and come back.”

The name of the boyfriend has yet to be released as of press time.

According to Burke, who along with the rest of the men at the Crowley Fire Department’s main station looked very tired Thursday afternoon, the investigation is still ongoing as to the cause of the fire.

“The State Fire Marshal is conducting the investigation at this time,” he said.

The Post-Signal will have more details on the investigation as they become available.
