MPD charges two, offering reward for officers weapon

MAMOU - Two men, a father and son, believed to have disarmed an officer Tuesday, March 18, have been charged and booked by officers here.

Officer Brent Zachary responded to a complaint Tuesday where an altercation was ongoing, according to Detective Todd Ortis. Onlookers identified the individual they said was responsible for striking another with a two-by-four, but that individual fled when approached by Zachary.

After a brief chase, Zachary stopped the suspect in a vacant lot on Ninth Street.

An altercation then ensued between Zachary and the suspect, as well as another individual who joined the chase. During the altercation, one of the males attempted to restrain Zachary’s arms and the other male proceeded to disarm Zachary, taking away his gun, impact weapon and chemical spray. Zachary received minor injuries in the scuffle and was treated at Savoy Medical Center. Zachary’s gun was never located.

Four people were detained, and now two have been charged. They are:

•Allen Thomas Sr., 43, 386 Ossman St., Mamou, has been charged with aggravated battery, disarming of a police officer, resisting an officer and battery upon a police officer.

•Allen Thomas Jr., 20, 804 Fontenot St., Mamou, was charged with battery upon a police officer, disarming of a police officer and disturbing the peace.

As a result of this incident, officers are going to patrol this area, which is a noted high drug traffic and traffic loitering area. This type of behavior, as well as attacking an officer will not be tolerated, according to authorities.

Ortis said the Mamou Police Department is offering a $500 reward, leading to the recovery of Zachary’s firearm, which was lost during the altercation.

Anyone having information regarding this weapon is strongly urged to contact the department at 468-5221. All information will remain strictly confidential.
