NAACP sets public meeting on school plan

The St. Landry Chapter of the NAACP will hold a meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. to discuss the proposed school consolidation plan.

The civil rights group's public meeting follows by hours the School Board's second closed discussion of the same plan.

The NAACP meeting will be at at 15056 Federal Road, Opelousas, 337-826-1326

The St. Landry Parish School Board has scheduled another discussion of the desegregation lawsuit behind closed doors, giving notice it intends to hold an executive session on the subject at its meeting Thursday, June 4.

Last month, the government's proposed consolidation and reorganization of schools was introduced by Supt. Michael Nassif. There was no discussion by the board or the audience and the board took the matter up in closed session.

At that meeting, the superintendent urged all and sundry to remember the report was only a recommendation and that the system had 120 days to consider what it wanted to do in response.

Some members since then have indicated the board will answer with its own plan.

Presumably, such considerations will be the subject of Thursday's private deliberations.

Another private matter will be an executive session devoted to the board's evaluation of Nassif. That review is part of the stipulation in his contract.

Board members last month received the evaluation documents they needed to complete preliminary to the Nassif review.
