Nature hike set at state site

The Louisiana State Parks system is celebrating its 75th Anniversary in 2009.

The journey began in 1934 when the legislature formed the State Parks Commission of Louisiana and totaled three parks. Today, the system operates over 20 Recreational Sites, 16 State Historic Sites and a Preservation Area that together have hosted millions of visitors over the years.

Poverty Point State Historic Site will be marking the event by offering a special ranger-led hike at 10 a.m. Feb. 14 Feb. 14. Guests are invited to walk the 2.5-mile Boy Scout Interpretive Hiking Trail that winds past all 5 of the major mounds on the site. Throughout the hike the ranger will discuss the mounds and the culture that lived here approximately 3,600 years ago.

To highlight the special day a commemorative walking stick medallion will be given to the first 15 hikers that participate in the hike. To purchase additional commemorative items, visit www.lastateparks.com. All proceeds will benefit future improvements at park sites.
