ND Junior Legion team slips past the Crowley Gators, 8-6
CROWLEY – Notre Dame improved to 1-1 in Junior American Legion play Wednesday with an 8-6 victory over the Crowley Gators, a team comprised mostly of 14-year olds who will be incoming freshmen at Notre Dame next year.
The Gators took a 2-1 lead in the first inning before Notre Dame stormed back to take a 6-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the third.
Luke Broussard and Chris Trosclair each recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-5 before Brennan Corzine singled in Billy Wartelle in the fourth to tie the game.
Wartelle worked a scoreless fifth inning for the Gators before giving up two runs in the sixth.
Phillip Artall started things off in the sixth for the Pios when he reached on a throwing error. He eventually scored on a wild pitch. Ross Holston followed with a walk before scoring on a single from Robert Walton.
Walton, who entered the game in relief of starting pitcher Charlie Mayeaux in the fourth, sat the Gators down in order before working out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh to preserve the victory.
Corzine and Broussard logged back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the seventh before Trosclair walked to load the bases. However, a grounder back to the mound enabled the Pios to get Corzine in a force out at the plate before a strikeout and a ground out to third ended the game.
Walton earned the victory, giving up one run on four hits and three walks. He struck out three in four innings of work.
Wartelle suffered the loss, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out four in three innings.
Broussard led the Gators at the plate with three hits and one RBI. Brennan Stelly and Corzine each had two hits and Trosclair and Wartelle each had one.
Walton and Jory Daigle each had one hit and one RBI for the Pios while Blake Miller had a single.
