Nemez Istre Martin
CROWLEY – Nemez Istre Martin, 86, a native of Estherwood, died while a resident of Maison de Lafayette Nursing Home on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. She was born July 12, 1922, the daughter of Moise and Eleanore Stutes Istre.
Mrs. Martin was a lifetime member of the Estherwood Ladies Altar Society and was known for her cakes at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church bazaars.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by Raney Martin, her husband of 62 years. Also preceded in death were three brothers, Mason Istre, Blaise Istre, and Daniel “Reed” Istre; one sister, Lula Stanley; one grandson, Jason Lopez; one godchild, Anthony Istre.
She was a beloved mother of three surviving daughters, Melva Lopez of Jennings, Loretta Rush of Broussard, and Donna Lyon of Lafayette and their husbands, Ernest Lopez, Timothy Rush, and Steve Lyon. Other survivors include three brothers, Willie Mack Istre of Morse, Dalton Istre of Carlyss and Merlyn Istre of Mermentau; seven grandchildren, Michael Lopez, Rachael Lopez Ourso, Barry Lopez and Cathy Lopez Pelt, Kathi Lyon Leger, Keri Lyon Gillis and Benjamin Rush. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Dylan Leger, Cole Gillis, Linzy Pelt, Ethan Lopez, Eric Lopez, and Beau Rush; and five step-great-grandchildren, Heath Pelt, Rodney Flyte, Jesse, Michael and Timmy Ourso.
Funeral arrangements will be made by Duhon Funeral Home in Crowley. Visitation hours took place on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and will continue on Friday from 11 a.m. till time of service Friday.
Rosary will be said Thursday at 7 p.m.
Services will take place at 3 p.m. Friday in St. Margaret’s Church of Estherwood officiated by Monsignor Russell Harrington.
Pallbearers will be Timothy Rush, Steve Lyon, Michael Lopez, Ben Rush, Cedric Istre, Barry Lopez. Honorary Pallbearers, Ernest Lopez and Tommy Prejean.
Burial will be at Istre Cemetery in Mermentau Cove following the services.
