New recreation board named

Changes were made at a recent City Council meeting to abolish the Parks and Recreation Committee, leaving behind only a Parks and Recreation Board.

Before the decision came to get rid of the Parks and Recreation Committee, a member of the city council was serving as the chairmen of the committee. It was also his job to oversee the Parks and Recreation Board.

“I found that it was no longer necessary to have a council committee for Parks and Recreation and a Parks and Recreation Board,” said Mayor Mark Piazza. “So we abolished the Parks and Recreation Committee.”

The removal of the committee left only six members on the Parks and Recreation Board. Those six members were made up of one representative from the Boys and Girls Club, one representative from A.A. Comeaux Youth, one representative appointed by the mayor, and three representatives appointed by the City Council.

“That left a six member board,” explained Mayor Piazza. “At that point the city council had a choice to leave it as six members, reduce it to five, or add a seventh position to the board.”

The council decided that it would be in the boards best interest to add a seventh person. That person was to be a representative of the Vermilion Parish Police Jury. The member selected from the Police Jury was Dudley Broussard. Those seven people will make up the new Parks and Recreation Board.

It is the job of the Parks and Recreation Board to oversee all nine city parks in Abbeville.

“The Parks and Recreation Board’s responsibility encompasses all city parks,” said mayor Piazza on the duty of the Parks and Recreation Board. “It is not just focused on recreation. It is also focused on activities at the nine parks, as well as oversight of the parks for issues involving maintenance and improvements of the parks.”

“They make recommendations to the city council on ways we can improve every park. The primary focus is on recreation, but they do other things besides that.”

The Parks and Recreation Board currently is without a chairman. The new chairmen will be one of the seven members on the current board, and will be selected by the board members. The selection of the chairmen will be held at the July 2 meeting.
