New school board members elected
Two appointees to the Tangipahoa Parish School Board won outright elections to the Board, according to complete but uncertified returns from the Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Court's office Saturday night.
Sonya Jenkins Traylor and Danny Ridgel, who were appointed to fill unexpired terms from vacancies incurred by the board last summer, defeated their respective challengers, Jeff Oglesbee and Dr. Thurrell McClendon, to win election to the board for the remaining year and eight month term.
Traylor won with 64.65 percent of the vote to first-time challenger Jeff Oglesbee's 35.35 percent, or 653 to 357 votes cast, as reported Saturday night.
The Traylor-Oglesbee race was the most-heated contest on the ballot, with approximately 1,010 votes cast, from the District F (Ponchatoula/Pumpkin Center) area.
In District E, Ridgel won a sort of re-election to the Board after he resigned his post last summer and was re-appointed to the Board within two weeks of his resignation. Ridgel defeated McClendon with 285 to 172 votes or approximately 62.3 percent to McClendon's 37.64 percent total.
Election machines will be opened and inspected Tuesday of this coming week, and returns will be officially certified Wednesday by the parish's board of election supervisors.
