Main Street grants available

Applications due by June 6

Through the Louisiana Main Street program, Crowley Main Street is soliciting Redevelopment Incentive Grant applications from downtown commercial building and/or business owners in the Main Street district.

The Louisiana Main Street program is able to offer two types of competitive grants — a $10,000 grant for major projects totaling a minimum total of $20,000, and a $2,500 grant for minor projects totaling a minimum of $5,000.

Grants are available for either exterior or interior rehabilitation.

Interior improvements are limited to exposing, restoring, replicating, or enhancing the original interior architectural features, or the installation of fire suppression systems. Grant recipients are required to provide, at minimum, a dollar-for-dollar monetary match.

Applications received from Crowley Main Street building and/or business owners will compete statewide for funding with other Main Street communities.

Grants are reviewed by an independent panel comprised of professionals working in historic preservation and related fields. Panelists consider, among other things, the degree of immediate economic and/or visual impact the project brings to the Main Street district in order to maximize the return on tax dollars reinvested in community revitalization projects.

To be eligible for Redevelopment Incentive Grant funds, a building must be located within the downtown Crowley Main Street district, be used for commercial purposes and be at least 50 years old.

Additionally, the proposed work must be approved by the Crowley Historic District Commission and Louisiana Main Street Office, while also conforming to the guidelines set forth in the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

Applicants must receive a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) from the Crowley Historic District Commission. The Crowley Historic District Commission will meet in June to review applications.

All applications must be turned into Crowley city hall by 4 p.m. June 6. Grant recipients will be notified of their standing on Sept. 5.

All work must begin within 30 days of signing the grant agreement. All work must be completed by April 30, 2015.

If your building is located within the Main Street district and you wish to apply for grant funds, please contact Tiffany Handy at Crowley City Hall, located at 425 N. Parkerson Ave., to obtain an application.
