On Sunday evening, April 20, Rayne Police Department received a call to the intersection of MLK and Lyman Ave. to disburse a large crowd that had gathered there, reports Police Chief Carroll Stelly.
City police officers asked the crowd to leave that area.
Chief Stelly reported while in the process of making an arrest, one of the officers was struck in the face multiple times by unknown subjects, and several patrol units were damaged.
The officer, who was not identified,  was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Rayne Police Department has opened an investigation into the incident that is still ongoing, says Chief Stelly.
