No. 1 LSUE splits with Dolphins

The top-ranked LSU Eunice baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday against in-state rival Delgado Community College.

LSUE (37-6) won the first game 12-0 sparked by a strong pitching performance from Chance Mistric before the Bengals dropped a 8-4 loss in the nightcap to DCC (28-11). The Dolphins’ win snapped a 10-game winning streak for LSUE.

Mistric remained perfect on the season at 10-0 as the freshman pitched a no-hitter while walking one batter and striking out eight.

It was his third shutout of the season and eighth complete game.

LSUE jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before adding runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in the win.

Zach Kirksey singled and scored on a double by Caleb Clowers, while Jacob Fisher walked and scored on a bunt by Brook Boudreaux.

Clowers scored on a Delgado throwing errors as the Bengal led 3-0. Trey Watkins doubled to right center to plate Boudreaux to complete the four-run barrage.

In the bottom of the fourth Clowers doubled, Boudreaux walked and both scored on Watkins’ single.

Watkins crossed home plate on a single by Bourque for a 7-0 advantage.

The Bengals added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth frame for a 10-0 margin.

Kirksey singled and scored on a sacrifice by Seth Granger and Jacob Fisher followed with a solo home run over the right field fence.

Boudreaux reached on a DCC error and scored on a triple by Watkins, who finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBI’s and two stolen bases to lead the Bengals.

LSUE completed the romp with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Les Aulds doubled down the leftfield line and scored on Granger’s single, while Kirksey was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch,

In game two, LSUE starting pitcher Joey Bourgeios (8-1) suffered his first defeat of the season. Bourgeios pitched five innings, giving up five hits and six earned runs while walking five batters and striking out eight.

Delgado scored three runs in the top of the first and added two more in the second before LSUE scored fourth straight runs over the next three innings to close the gap to 5-4.

Delgado sealed the win with a three-run explosion in the top of the sixth inning and a 8-4 lead.

Watkins, Aulds, Granger and Boudreaux all recorded RBI in the loss.

Chandler Laurent sparked the DCC offense as he went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI.

The Bengals travel Friday to play Baton Rouge Community College at Pete Goldsby field in a single nine-inning game time set for 6 pm.

BRCC returns the trip to Eunice on Saturday for a three-way round-robin with East Central Mississippi.
