No. 16 Lady Cajuns slip past Iowa State

HOUSTON, Texas – A double steal and wild pitch in the eighth inning lifted No. 16 Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team over Iowa State with a 6-5 win on the first day of the Marriott Houston Invitational.

The No. 16 Cajuns improve to 6-0 with the win.

The Cajuns struggled in the first three innings. Through the first two innings, UL was unable to reach base. With one out in the third, Vallie Gaspard drew a walk. Katie Smith was able to single but two fly outs would end the inning for the Cajuns.

Brittany Cuevas was able to keep the Cajuns in control, striking out seven through the first four innings.

The Cajuns would finally get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Erikka Murphy led off the inning with an infield single. She would then steal second and advance to third on a single by Gaspard. With one out, Melissa Verde hit a low liner to right field, scoring Murphy from third.

UL’s bats would come alive in the sixth inning. Britni Soria would lead off with a single. Nerissa Myers would reach on fielder’s choice with Soria moving over to second. Gabriele Bridges would then take the first pitch over the left field wall for her second home run of the season and UL would take a 4-0 lead.

Iowa State cut into UL’s lead in the bottom of the inning after a home run by Lauren Kennewell. Three-straight singles by the Cyclones would go on to load the bases with no outs. A fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly would allow two more runs to cross the plate.

Iowa State would tie the game, 4-4, after a RBI-single through the right side.

In the top of the seventh, Lana Bowers would advance to first after being hit by a pitch. Jensen Tydelski would replace her as a pinch runner. Soria would single to right field, moving Tydelski to second. Both runners would then advance after a wild pitch. But Soria would get caught up in a double play after Myers hit a shallow fly ball to left field.

Cuevas would closeout the inning, fanning two to send the game into extra innings.

With the international rule in affect, Myers would start the eighth inning on second. She moved over to third after a wild pitch. Bridges would get hit by a pitch. Jennifer Martin replaced Bridges at first base as a pinch runner. The Cajuns would then execute a double steal with Myers scoring for the 5-4 advantage. Martin would move to third on a ground out by Murphy. A wild pitch allowed Martin to cross the plate to give UL a 6-4 lead.

The Cyclones would plate a run in the bottom of the eighth and had a runner on second but would fly to end the game.

Soria led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4. Six other Cajuns recorded a hit with Bridges grabbing three RBI.

Through five innings, Cuevas (3-0) was on point, striking out seven and not allowing a Cyclone to reach base in 15 at bats. She finished out the win with 11 strikeouts. The senior hurler allowed six hits and five runs, only four of which were earned, in eight innings of play.

The Cajuns will now face tournament-host Houston later this afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT.
